Solid hardwood is surprisingly easy to take care of, only needing periodic attention. Here are a few tips from our craftsmen:

  • Dust often to remove everyday abrasive particles from wood surfaces. Before dusting, moisten cloth lightly. A dry cloth can leave hairline scratches on the finish. When dusting, always lift lamps and other objects—avoid sliding them across the furniture’s surface.
  • Wood finishes benefit from occasional waxing or polishing. A paste wax can be applied every 6-12 months. Remove old wax first with a mild non-alkaline soap and water solution. We also recommend orange or lemon oil as a polish.
  • Surfaces also can be cleaned with a mild non-alkaline soap and water. Use the suds on a damp sponge or cloth, but be sure to pretest the solution on an out-of-sight section to make sure it does not damage the finish. Dry immediately with a soft cloth and buff lightly, following the grain.
  • Avoid harsh or abrasive cleaners, products containing silicone, excessive moisture, long exposure to staining agents such as mustard, and scratching the finish with acrylic nails or sharp objects.
  • Avoid excessively dry air in your home, or highly variable humidity swings, which stresses the natural expansion & contraction of wood. Try using a humidifier and/or air conditioner to keep your home’s relative humidity between 25-35%.
  • Avoid placing solid furniture directly in front of radiators, heat runs or woodburning stoves.
  • Avoid prolonged, direct sunlight on your furniture’s finish.
  • Avoid yanking or slamming doors and lids, and avoid dragging the furniture when it must be moved.
  • Store filler leaves as close as possible to the table itself. For example, dining room table leaves are better off in an upstairs closet than in a damp basement.
  • Use coasters and pads to prevent damage from heavy objects, hot casseroles and wet glasses. Blot spills immediately, and be especially careful with solvents, perfume, alcohol and nail polish.

Since accidental dents and scratches do happen, you can feel secure knowing your investment in solid hardwood furniture is easy to repair and refinish if necessary. We are happy to recommend furniture repair professionals around the country who are reasonably priced and can leave your furniture looking like new.
